AARP Card
January 1, 2008 – 9:04 pm | by TreySo, I’m officially old and here’s how I know:
1) Three days ago, after visiting the chiropractor for the third time in two weeks, I had to buy a back support cushion for my office chair. Yeah, only old people do that.
2) I rented the movie “Superbad.” One of the highest grossing movies of the year. Supposed to be excellent. It was an absolute turd on a plate. I love T and A movies and language doesn’t bother me, but this bore absolutely no resemblance to funny.
3) I was at Wal-Mart in the music section (and no, I don’t buy music from the Revelations Beast, but I do check it out sometimes) and there was a teen-aged girl going over things to buy with a Wal-Mart gift card. Her brother, help that he was, suggested a Styx CD. She said – and I friggin’ quote – “Eeeewwww, Mom likes them.”
Yeah, so does Trey, ya’ teen-aged skank. In fact, I have THREE of their albums. And yeah, I used the word album. Do you even know what that is? The only saving grace was that she also looked at Metallica CDs and I did recently purchase two of those.
So, can one of you guys send me an AARP brochure?

When I was in college (mind you, this was a long time ago), a friend and I were sitting in the Dairy Queen enjoying our cheese fries, chili-cheese dogs, and root beer (no cheese), when we heard the following exchange from the booth behind us. This was approximately 1984.
“Have you heard that song by that new group, REO Speedwagon?”
“You mean ‘Keep on Loving You’?”
“Yeah, that one. It’s okay, I guess, but I don’t know if that band is going to go anywhere.”
To be fair, my buddy and I were musicians and the two teenagers talking about REO were airheads, but we thought everyone knew that REO had been around for nearly 20 years already. Back then, we didn’t think of ourselves as old, we just thought the rest of the world was stupid. Now, when I hear stuff like that, I do think I’m old.
Oh, and by the way, I had every Styx album, on both Wooden Nickel and A&M records. Thanks to CDs, I still have all the songs, but I sold all my vinyl years ago.

Sorry, Kiddo. You have to do another 9 years before you can join AARP. There are *some* things you are still too young for!

We may be getting more mature but the music we listened to was performed by people who could at least sing, play an instrument and sometimes write their own lyrics.
Enjoy,
Tammy

The first time I started to feel old was when the young actress in “The Brady Bunch Movie” said how much she liked doing a period piece.
And, for his birthday a few years ago, I got my brother a Styx CD and poster autographed by the current incarnation of the band (including Chuck, who was with them for their Vegas show that year). He has it framed on the wall as one of his prized possessions. Then again, my favorite group was The Band.

Hey Trey hows life? Quick question. What was Eric’s last name? I think it was Eric he played the drums with our sophomore year, he was a senior. He had black hair and smoked cigarettes.
After graduation I worked at the Texas Tumbleweed with him. He taught me how to French inhale.
Was his name even Eric?

Hah, same thing happened to me when Boston’s Third Stages album came out. The 7th grade sister of my then girlfriend told me about this really great debut album….
Another way to feel old? Peter Frampton is doing one of those Geiko Insurance ads…where the D-list celeb is interpreting the customers’ thoughts. It’s pretty sad….

Sing and play and write their own lyrics? What does that mean? Are you telling me Britney doesn’t do those things? Shit, I’ll be there’s no Santa Claus, either, is there?

Dani, are you talking about Christianson? What the hell was his name? John, maybe. Or Todd? Maybe Paul. I can’t remember. He smoked ALOT and had dark hair and wasn’t particularly tall. He played timpani in concert band and tenors in marching band. Missed the bus to Lubbock for the drumline show and so drove his own hulking early 70s Cadillac. Or Gary Causey, maybe. He was the drum captain. Drove that gray Supra. I’m not sure who else you might mean.

I just had to let you know that I am going to be a GRANDMOTHER in May… yes, a Grandmother. When did that happen. I freaked out for a while but I’m much better now. My son and his wife are having a little girl and her name is Catelyn Leanne Kirkpatrick. I still remember my first kiss as a kid!
Talk to you soon!

Yeah him with the black hair. I was trying to think of his name. I hung out with him for a while after high school and was wondering about him te other day. I think the last name was Christianson. He was kind of crazy. You know the Lee Band was in Seattle around Thanksgiving. But I was too sick to get up there to see their performance. I was really bummed not to get to go see Mr. Storie.
